L/602/2547 Facilitate coaching and mentoring in health and social care and young people’s settings

1.1 analyse the differences between coaching and mentoring

Coaching is the process where an individual is supervised by a supervisor to improve their
competencies and their capabilities. Usually to learn a new skill or to learn new information.
Mentoring is more of an advisory process where a new member of staff is guided by a senior
member of staff on how to do something that is already in place, this is with frequent meetings and
discussions on how they are progressing and what they have learned whereas coaching isn’t as
frequent and can often be self teaching that is put into place to show someone what you have
learned from them giving you information or demonstration.

1.2 Explain circumstances when coaching would be an appropriate method of supporting learning at
work

Coaching can be used in all different situations in the workplace especially when new things are
implemented and staff have to be trained on them. For example, if a new policy is implemented by
the company then the management team need to coach staff on this. It can also be used to help
staff with their development by observing but also offering constructive criticism in a positive way.
Often we may also have trainers from head office come in to deliver important training relating to
policies, the curriculum or Ofsted, this is a good type of coaching.

1.3 Explain circumstances when mentoring would be an appropriate method of supporting learning
at work

Mentoring is used for any new staff members, staff taking on promotions and also for our
apprentices. This is an important time for these staff members as they need to be introduced to not
only the company but the nursery too. It is important that staff are correctly mentored and are
ready from the beginning of the journey.

For staff who are taking on promotions it is important that they are correctly inducted and trained
for their new role, for this to happen we usually make their mentor someone that is currently in that
role or someone that has been within that role because they are aware of the expectations of the
role and will have encountered their own barriers that they can support the member of staff with.

Apprentices will need that guidance more, due to their age and also because they haven’t long
finished school or college therefore it is a completely new environment for them and a working one
at that. The mentor will be crucial to them and it is important that the mentor is always keeping in
contact with their apprentice and making sure that the workload isn’t too much for them.

1.4 Explain how coaching and mentoring complement other methods of supporting learning

Coaching and mentoring are really useful when it comes to supporting learning through
appraisals/supervisions. It is a chance for staff to show and discuss with you their learnings and
developments and for you to then assist them which links with mentoring or seek training for them
to really coach them to do better and learn more for themselves. The mentoring and coaching that is
received from a member of staff is important because during it will either have a negative or positive
impact on their appraisal, if they have received lots of beneficial coaching or mentoring but not
implemented it then it will be negative for the. If they have worked with what they have received
then it will be positive. They are different outcomes for this.
