Lesson 1: Historical Development of the Phlebotomoy Profession - correct answer
* Most well known of historic means of bloodletting is Leeching
-used to suck blood from patients of small amounts in specific areas
-Required enticing one or more leeches to bite the patient in the predetermined
area
- Leeches then sucked the excess or diseased blood from the patient until they
were full ;removing & then destroying the leeches took away the patient's bad
blood

* Cupping: Glass jars where heated w/ a flame & placed on the patient's skin.
-As the hot air in the cups cooled, it created a vaccum in the jar that pulled blood
to the surface of the skin.
-The skin would then be sliced to release the blood. The bad blood would be
released & collected from the body

*Most common bloodletting tech was the simple cutting of the blood vessels.
-Fleams: specific cutting devices were created from metal in a variety of sizes for a
variety of bloodletting services

In Medieval times, barbers, who also provided a variety of health & healing
services such as surgery preformed these bloodletting services.
- this lead to the iconic symbol of the red, white & sometimes blue pole. Red
=bloody bandages used to hand outside the barber's business.
-Role has changed, the icon remains as a way of identifying a barber shop
