CASE STUDY: LYMPSTONE

Physical Geography
Lympstone occupies a small valley where the Wotton Brook ows into the River Exe

Lympstone’s Past
From 1200-1800, Lympstone was a small port under the administration of Exeter that had strong
trading links around the coast and cross channel.
However, the size of the trade ships grew to be too large for the depth of the River Exe, and the
industry ended.
Instead, the estuary itself was used for shing and shell sh industry, particularly mussels.
The small port also allowed some boats to travel to the North Atlantic for cod shing and
whaling. The shell sh industry was bene ted by the railways in the 1800s, creating a wider
market.
Lympstone rst became a tourist destination in the 1840s, where wealthy families wanted the
novelty of being by the sea. This led to the expansion of the village to accommodate visitors.
The industry also bene tted from the railways in the 1860s brining in tourists from further away.
In the 1990s due to the further improvement of transportation, Lympstone became a commuter
settlement or ‘dormitory settlement’ for Exeter.
Time Space Compression: The shrinking of the world caused by the reductions in the
relative distance between places.
Built Environment
- Old shops have been converted into housing
- The heart of the village has strict planning rules to protect the villages architecture and
aesthetic
- New larger homes have been built upon the cli that have more architectural freedom

- Its in the county of Merseyside
- Its located along the River Mersey

• Toxteth is located on the undulating land rising o of the River Mersey
• The Mersey itself is fast owing, resulting in little amounts of foreshore
Toxteth’s Past
Pre 1500s: Royal Hunting Park
Late 1500s: Opened up to become farming land
1600s: Small industry using water power from a dammed stream
Beginning Of Industrial Revolution: Became a major port with many industries including
forges, copper works and ceramic factories
Mid Industrial Revolution: Growing population led to increase in our milling and brewing.
The river was lined with docks and shipyards
Late Industrial Revolution: Cheap and poorly constructed homes built to accommodate
industrial workforce. There were epidemics of cholera and typhoid due to overcrowding and
lack of hygiene
1900s: Middle class migrate out of the city into the suburbs due to improved transportation
