,General Marking Guidance
• All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the first candidate in
exactly the same way as they mark the last.
• Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded for what they have
shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
• Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their perception of
where the grade boundaries may lie.
• There is no ceiling on achievement. All marks on the mark scheme should be used appropriately.
• All the marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners should always award
full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the mark scheme. Examiners should also be
prepared to award zero marks if the candidate’s response is not worthy of credit according to the
mark scheme.
• Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles by which marks
will be awarded and exemplification may be limited.
• When examiners are in doubt regarding the application of the mark scheme to a candidate’s
response, the team leader must be consulted.
• Crossed out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it with an alternative
response.

Question
Answer Mark
Number
1(b) Knowledge 1, Application 2, Analysis 1

Knowledge/understanding: 1 mark for knowledge of branding or
types of branding or benefits of branding
• A brand is a name, symbol, design or slogan that distinguishes a
product or service from its competitors
• Own branding is products marketed under the brand name of a
retailer, like a supermarket, rather than the name of the
manufacturer
• Understanding of a reason e.g. Tesco brand is established and
well known
Application: up to 2 marks for e.g.
• Tesco owns One Stop/One Stop is a subsidiary of Tesco
• One Stop will no longer sell its own brand products
• 95% of products from Tesco
• Examples of Tesco own brands e.g. Finest

Analysis: 1 mark for e.g.
• One benefit could be increased sales as Tesco branded products
are a nationally recognised brand and will be familiar to One
Stop customers, potentially increasing sales
• Added value through convenience as customers can buy some
Tesco products from One Stop instead of needing to visit a Tesco
supermarket. This could increase One Stop sales.
