• Maternal health is the health of women
during pregnancy, childbirth and the
postpartum period
• It encompasses the health care dimensions of
family planning, preconception, prenatal and
postnatal care in order to reduce maternal
morbidity and mortality

• Socio-cultural factors
– Early marriage, early childbirth, harmful traditional
practices including female genital mutilation
• Economy
– Women educational status, health coverage, level
of sexual abuse
, • Psychological factors
– Risk of depression after abuse
• Health and nutrition factors
– Status of women who are not getting adequate
amount of nutrients and proper reproductive
health services
• Gender discrimination
– Lack of women empowerment, giving more
attention to a male child
