The constant murmur of the engine had taken its toll. I couldn’t take it anymore. We were 8
miles out from Idlib, convoying out with another team from second division; They looked
inexperienced. They were clearly newbies. We couldn’t depend on them, no way in hell
were we going to rely on them for safety. They could barely drive their trucks in a straight
line, who knows what their situ was with firing a gun. We already had been on the road for
8hrs, another 1hr wouldn’t be so bad, I told myself. Our Armoured Humvees looked
exhausted, as if they were going to just simply give in and abandon us in the middle of
nowhere. These things have been to the most dangerous places on earth, they’ve had
scratches and dents that could tell stories worth an Oscar. The gruelling journey was almost
at an end, I could not wait.
We were transporting the animal. The devil himself. Isaac. Responsible for waging attacks on
US soil. He was a high value asset, as tired as we were, we couldn’t afford to stop for a
break, which was fair enough. We had made excellent progress, our ‘Guardian Angel’ had
been watching over us, acting as the very hand of god himself. The Aerial Reconnaissance
Drone had us all in safe hands, or so we thought.
It all started when we heard a huge thunder, a godly noise, a sound that seemed to not
belong to this world, that’s how loud it was. The sky was turned into a bright orange, fiery
mess. The safety we once were in flipped into the latter end, danger and confusion subdued
us all. What was going on, what the hell was happening. As we were coming to terms with
what was going on, 3 Harrier Jump Jets made a daring low flyby just metres away from us. It
was a raid, but by who. Who was so brazen and brave to ambush one of the most sought-
after captives held by the United States of America? The Russians? The Arabs? North Korea?
We had no clue.
Ewe went into panic mode, with our defences being forced to come into play. An SOS call
was sent out to base, we needed help. QRF was to arrive with an ETA time of 20 minutes.
We all, all 13 of us, had to protect Isaac, we had to hold the fort until help came, because it
was obvious, they were after him whoever they were. We picked up pace, driving at an
increased speed, we were not to stop for anything until we reached the American Embassy.
I was lead driver, escorting the other 3 trucks through the sandy and uneven roads. I wasn’t
sure what to expect, but what I did know was that sooner or later, they were going to catch
us. Barrelling past anything and everything, the world outside became a blur, until it became
black. My ears started to ring, I could hear the painful gasps of one of the soldiers in my
Humvee, he was injured. We had crashed. Correction, we were crashed into. A Toyota Hilux
had T-Boned the vehicle that I was in, we flipped over and came to rest on the side of the
road. It was them, whoever they were. They were here.
We had no choice but to get out, I had my bullet proof vest on, so did the others. We
secured the perimeter around the Humvees; we took our positions and did what we do
best. My team and second division, those who weren’t injured, were prepared. We had
them, there was no way these guys were getting past us, no way in hell. The hazy looks on
some of our faces said it all. We weren’t ready for this shit, but it’s what we signed up for.
