Module: Becoming a Sociologist

Seminar 10: Task Recap

Test
 It is compulsory for single subject students to take the test
 Once you start it, you have 1 hour to complete it.
 There are 25 questions

You can still pass the module on the portfolio alone.

Overall
 Conclusion – summarise what the key points were, how useful did you find it?
Did you find it interesting? Did you find it difficult? You are giving an
assessment of how you found that activity.
 Focus groups perhaps more difficult to run online
 Best to reference at the end of each task
 You don’t need to come up with a completed name for the title

Interview
 Provide a background of the person you spoke to – age, gender etc.
 It would be more interesting to write it out as a discussion
 What were the key things? How did it match up to your own experiences and
thoughts and attitudes?
 Mention the broader higher education policies
 Look at the resources on Moodle and see if you can integrate it with your work

Reading Media Representation
 We looked at the two adverts and looked at the particular characteristics used
 The voiceovers of the people – how did they come across?
 In what sense were they gendered?
 Issues that came up in the advert – the girls one was about doing labour,
about looking after the baby. The boys one was about instructing them what
to do, there were no rules – they were free to do what they wanted to do.
 Don’t get confused with the semiotic language
 What’s the ideological message that’s coming across?
