Sanctuaries:
Place surrounding the place of worship
●​3 main sanctuaries- Athens, Olympia, Delphi
●​Separating boundary

Temples:
●​Mycenaean age- palaces, beehive tombs, small shrines
●​Dark age- little evidence so only functional buildings
●​Mid-7th century- temples begin to develop

Early temples:
●​superior construction compared to others
●​Built in marble- more emphasis on these buildings
●​Have to look like symbol of god/goddess
●​Periptheral temples- Rectangular building with inner room
●​Surrounded by columns to enhance the external appearance
●​Gradual form of architecture
●​Doric column- have metopes on them (individual blocks of decorated
stone- divided by stones)- big temples




●​Ionic column- continuous friezes - smaller temples

Athens- the acropolis:
●​The acropolis is the hill- city grows from this
●​High point in the city

●​Mycenaean palaces - king would have lived there
●​Persian wars destroyed it - kept buildings as burnt for long time (can be
defeated)

●​Centre of history and mythology - sacred place
●​5th century- thinks it’s the best place ever- need to rebuild

●​Bases plans on early buildings but improved
●​Building program begun by Pericles
●​Symbolises what Athens is
●​All buildings are sacred to Athena

The Parthenon:
●​Doric temple
●​Bigger and better than everyone- got ionic hints, frieze
●​Housed a gold and ivory Athene- Pheidias (big man)
●​Pool of oil around statue- no dry ivory and reflection of her
●​Metopes-
East-battle between gods and giants- Gigantomachy
West- Athene vs Amazons- Amazonomachy
North-Lapiths vs centaurs-Centauromachy
South-Trojan war
●​Show that the Greek always win/the best
●​Pediments-
East- Birth of Athene from Zeus' head
West- Athene vs Poseidon for patronage
●​Inner colonnade- frieze Panathenaic procession
