Cold War Containment

After WWII, US diplomat George Kennan advocated the policy of containment in dealing with
the Soviet Union and communism: Soviet expansion must be blocked and communism must be
contained–prevented from spreading. Essentially, communism would be bottled up in a
container: it could stay where it already existed, in the Soviet Union, but it could not be allowed
to spread anywhere else. The policy was at first applied to Europe, it was later extended to the
Middle East, Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
