1. State one Target Behavior (i.e., elopement, SIB, yelling, out of seat):

Target Behavior: Non-compliance

2. Provide an Operational Definition with examples and non-examples for one target
behavior:

Operational Definition: Non-compliance or refusal refers to any action or response that
defies, or does not match the instructions given, especially by a person in authority
(parent, teacher, care giver etc.) within a given time. It includes verbal and non-verbal
defiance to an instruction, requirements or a request made specifically to a person
(LAUSD, n.d.).

Examples:

 Doing something else rather than that requested

 Plopping or rolling to the ground in insolence

 Walking away in anger from the requester

 Throwing away objects

 Self-injurious behaviors to illustrate anger

 Crying

 Verbal reactions like “no”

 Attempting to explain why s/he will not do as requested

 Lack of acting because the child did not understand what was requested

 Doing/responding timely but not completing a task requested in given time

 Engaging in the task as required

3. Identify an appropriate Measurement System (i.e., count, duration, IRT, etc.) and explain
why you chose it for one target behavior:

 Chosen Measurement System: percentage or Trials to Criterion
 Rationale: level of non-compliance can be measured using percentage. This can be
achieved by calculating the quantity of directions or instructions receiving non-
compliance or defiance as a proportion of the total count of instructions given within a
specified period. The outcome is viably illustrative of obedience/compliance levels in a
child. Trials to Criterion can also measure compliance/non-compliance behavior of a
child in the selected video. This tool measures behavioral responses based on the number
of times an instruction is given to elicit a desired response in the child, in this case stop
yelling, plopping, throwing tantrums and throwing away chairs (BACB, n.d.).
