CEREBELLUM
Cerebellum Fxn:
1. Coordination and prediction of movement
2. mediates skilled manipulation of muscles
3. receives information from PNS concerning proprioception, position of the head (vestibular info)
4. Muscle tone
5. Exteroceptive (visual, auditory, tactile) information from environment
In contrast to the basal ganglia, which integrate cortical activity into behavioral output, the cerebellum acts to coordinate and
predict cortical output, thereby improving the efficacy and precision of our movement and cognition.
An important concept to remember when thinking about the cerebellum is that spinal inputs and outputs to
the cerebellum related to truncal stability are bilateral and those related to limb movement are ipsilateral.
Lesions to the cerebellum result in truncal instability or ipsilateral limb deficits
CEREBELLUM ANATOMY
• LOCATED IN POSTERIOR CRANIAL FOSSA, TRIANGLE IN SHAPE
• SEPARATED FROM CEREBRUM BY TENTORIUM CEREBELLI
• LIES OVER 4TH VENTRICLE
• RIGHT AND LEFT HEMISPHERS CONNECTED BY VERMIS
• CONNECTED 2 BRAINSTEM WITH 3 CEREBELLAR PEDUNCLES (SUPERIOR, MIDDLE, INFERIOR)
• ALL TRACTS TO AND FROM CEREBELLUM TRAVEL THRU CEREBELLAR PEDUNCLES

LOBES
The cerebellum is divided into 3 lobes
1. Anterior lobes
2. Posterior lobe
3. Flocconodular lobe
• On the superior surface, the anterior lobe is
separated from the posterior lobe by the
primary fissure.
