K1 Outline the Health and safety requirements, and safe working practices and procedures
required for the mechanical maintenance activities undertaken
You need to follow the health and safety at work act 1974, the Personal Protective Equipment
regulation, COSHH (control of substances hazardous to health), RIDDOR (reporting of injuries).
Working practices and procedures are to be followed at all times in order to remain safe. A few
examples of these practices are; wearing the appropriate PPE needed to carry out the job
(overalls, glasses, and safety boots). Furthermore, you should store your tools away so that they
do not get lost or damaged by doing this, your work space remains tidy too. A safe working
practice would also be making sure you tidy and clean up your workspace. This would be
emptying the bins so that they’re not overflowing which could cause hazards, cleaning down the
machines and moping surfaces etc. Another safe working practice within the workplace would be
making sure you lock off machines after use so that no one who is not trained is able to use
them, furthermore you should also make sure the guard is up so that the machine is totally
locked off completely (you could also hit the emergency stop button for extra precaution).
Before starting a job, you must ensure that you have a permit to work which will ensure that you
are qualified and able to carry out the job in question. If you become ill and won’t be able to turn
up to work then you need to call the onsite manager to cancel the permit to work.
A way of adhering to Health and safety at work act 1974 firstly, would be to create risk
assessments of the workplace where you will identify hazards within the workplace. In a risk
assessment you should also identify the likelihood of the hazard happening and the severity it
may have.
K2 Explain the importance of wearing appropriate protective clothing and equipment (PPE), and
of keeping the work area safe and tidy
It is important to wear the appropriate personal protective equipment/clothing for example;
overalls, glasses, safety boots and gloves. We should wear these to keep ourselves safe. It is
important to keep the work area safe and tidy to avoid things like slips, trips and falls from
happening (avoiding injuries). In some places of work you are also given barrier cream, this is
important to use so that your hands do not get exposed to chemicals that could irritate your skin.
You should always clean up any spillages straightaway to prevent slips/trips from happening and
keeping the work area tidy shows that you are working in a professional/safe manner.
Furthermore, after using the systems you should make sure you isolate and dissipate when not in
use.
