Slide 1: Fact.
It is estimated that nearly 119,000 children are victims of maltreatment each year. Child
maltreatment is not just physical abuse, it is any form of behaviour that is threatening or
violating to a child. Neglect, for example, is also included.
Slide 2: Choice of topic.
Child abuse is a serious social problem. It often has a deep and long-lasting impact on the
victims and society. Child abuse and neglect is missed far more often than thought, and
often when it is noticed no one dares to speak up about it.
Slide 3: Introduction.
I am Iva van Duuren and I am studying social legal services. I am interested in this topic
because in everyday life little is said about this, while you read about it more and more in
the media. Child abuse cannot, and should not be a taboo subject. The seriousness of this
social problem should be recognized.
Child Abuse
Slide 4: Definition.
What is child abuse? Any physical, psychological or sexual behaviour that is threatening or
violating to a child.
This also includes witnessing domestic violence, neglect, deprivation of essential support,
medical care and education.
Slide 5: Child abuse rates.
In 2021 the organization Veilig Thuis, Safe Haven, received almost 120 thousand reports of
child abuse or domestic violence. They also provided advice to victims or professionals 134
thousand times.
Slide 6: There are two forms of child abuse:
Active maltreatment includes physical abuse, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse. In passive
maltreatment, the adult neglects something that causes the child to be maltreated. Passive
maltreatment includes emotional and physical neglect.
Slide 7: The most common form of child abuse.
The most common forms of child maltreatment are emotional and physical neglect. 36
percent of cases are children who are emotionally neglected and 24 percent of cases are
children who are physically neglected.
