Governance and Strategy
1. Use the article of Mintzberg (1990) to critically reflect on the assumptions of a
design-perspective on strategy. What implications does this thinking have for the
position of a healthcare manager (CEO) when it comes to strategy?
Design school is a very classical way of strategizing. We think of it and develop it, and
only after we start to build it and make a structure around it. In reality, it might not
really work because sometimes we strategize in an existing structure, there is already
smth there. Hc manager: sitting in an ivory tower, developing an amazing strategy. This
might create challenges and critique though.
2. Rouleau (2013) provides an overview of strategy-as-practice research. Use her article
to critically reflect on strategy-as-practice and discuss different topics for studying
strategy in healthcare. What implications does this perspective have for healthcare
managers?
Strategy-as-practice: not about developing a strategy where someone sits down and
thinks hard what strategy and steps they wanna develop for the firm. Its strategy that
happens on the go, what people do, it is what is being done. Less explicit, no set steps.
Something that happens bc people engage with each other and interact and through
this they make an implicit strategy. People do this on purpose, and also strategizing
happens naturally. The five views of SAP is important to know!! First three ones focus on
the individual, last 2 on the organization. Different theoretical standpoints which you
can take to it. Theoretical reflection on this concept.
