Essay on using authentic materials and internet
Write a 500-700 word essay in which you:
a) Explain the value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching (See Units 5 and 9 and do your
own research).
b) Say why you feel the text you have chosen would be appropriate for this class and explain the reasons for
your vocabulary selection. If you have adapted your text, explain the rationale for the changes you made in
this section.
c) Say why you feel the activities you have chosen would be appropriate for this class.
d) Comment on the advantages and disadvantages of using the internet for teaching and language resources.

a) The value of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching
The advantage of using authentic materials in foreign language teaching is that they provide your higher-
level students a chance to experience the language as its used by the native speakers. Authentic materials
will also help the students to learn how to effectively communicate in the language that they are learning as
they depict the language as its used in everyday life. Another reason why it is valuable is that it guides the
students toward the language they need for their particular context, such as typing a formal email to their
boss compared to typing an informal mail to a friend. Authentic materials are valuable as they give insight in
to the target culture, as well as their opinion on different issues or events.
b) Reasons for the selection of this text and the 12 vocabulary items
My reasoning behind choosing this particular text is that it will be applicable to everyone no matter what
country you are from thus it should be interesting for the students. It has a nice mixture of simple and
higher-grade text which will challenge the students. There is also direct quote in the text which will help
students in understanding how the language is used in everyday life.
My reasoning for choosing these particular vocabulary items is that they should provide a good challenge
for them but at the same time not being too difficult which would end up only frustrating the students.
c) Why my activities would be appropriate for this class
The dictionary quiz is appropriate as it challenges the students to use the dictionary in multiple ways, from
using it to find the synonyms of certain words to finding the definition of other words and using them to
construct sentences. I chose the movie scavenger hunt as I feel that it would be applicable to the students
as most people like movies, furthermore it gives the students a chance to do their own research while
gaining a better understanding of the topic. The crossword puzzle is appropriate for this class as it makes
use of the definitions of words in order to complete the activity. It will also get the students to skim / scan
the reading text in order to see the words in context.
