Case 8
Learning goals:
1. What is tissue?
2. Muscle tissue
3. Connective tissue
4. Epithelial tissue
5. Nervous tissue
1
, 1. Muscle tissue
Three types of muscle tissue:
1. Skeletal muscle
2. Cardiac muscle
3. Smooth muscle
Sarcoplasm = the cytoplasm of muscle cells
Sarcoplasmic reticulum = the smooth ER of muscle cells
Sarcolemma = the cell membrane of muscle cells
1. Skeletal muscle
It contains muscle fibers (= fibers of very long, multinucleated cells with
cross-striations)
Contraction: quick, forceful and usually under voluntary control.
The masses of fibers are arranged in regular bundles surrounded by the
epimysium. Each fascide of muscle fibers is wrapped in another
connective tissue layer called the perimysium. Individual muscle fibers
are surrounded by the endomysium.
