OVERVIEW GRID TO SHOW HOW CASE STUDIES CAN BE USED IN DIFFERENT QUESTIONS…

Case Study Notes/evidence

It is located in the south of England, it is a discordant coastline (Studland bay to Durlston Head) that
has many erosional and depositional landforms. Dorset’s location means that it is exposed to
south-westerly prevailing winds that bring storms from the Atlantic ocean, this brings in high energy,
destructive waves which increases the amount of erosion on the coastline.
- Swanage ⇒ headland and bay
DORSET COAST
In Swanage, a sea wall was built in the 1920s which provided a promenade for tourism. Groynes were
installed in the 1930s with many recently being replaced. Beach replenishment has also occurred.
- Old harry rocks & his wife ⇒ caves, stacks & stumps
- Chesil beach ⇒ bar & tombolo connects to the Isle of Portland, behind there the Fleet lagoon
- Durdle door ⇒ arch, hard limestone
Is the headland that forms the most northerly point of the Holderness coast. It consists of white chalk
FLAMBOROUGH HEAD which surrounds it, it lies in horizontal layers.

The Holderness Coast is located on the east coast of England, extending 61 km from Flamborough in
the north to Spurn Point in the south.
- Strong prevailing winds create longshore drift that moves material south along the coastline.
- Intense weather systems.
- The cliffs are made of soft boulder clay which erodes rapidly when saturated
THE HOLDERNESS Management - Tides flow to the south, transporting material along the coast. There is an imbalance as the
harder chalk up the coast does not provide enough material for places like Hornsea so
backwash removes more than what is deposited by swash
Hornsea:
There is up to 3m of erosion per year because the cliffs are formed from weak boulder clay
- The management protects tourist features such as arcades and hotels, it creates a sandy beach

, - (✓) A sea wall was built
- (✓/X) Wooden groynes were repaired and built at a cost of £5.2 million
- (X) The groynes prevented material reaching popular seaside towns to the South
- (X) Tourism leads to congestion in the summer, this negatively impacts the local residents
- (X) The wall is an unattractive feature

Mappleton:
There was £2.9 million of damage a year before the management was put in place. It produced a
sandy beach and also protects the town
- (✓/X) The rock armour cost £2 million
- (X) In the South of Mappleton, the rate of erosion had increase significantly - terminal groyne
syndrome (causing a starvation of sediment)

Easington:
- There is a gas terminal located here which supplies 25% of all British Gas, this is at risk
- (✓/X) Rock armour was introduced but it cost £4.5 million
- (✓/X) Although this scheme protects the gas terminal, it doesn't protect the village nearby,
putting these local residents at risk of their homes being destroyed
- (X) It prevents material reaching Sites of Special Scientific Interest SSSIs which are further
south, reaching places like slang dunes

Economic:
- The number of visitors along the coastline has dropped
- The gas terminal at Easington is at risk, it supplies 25% of Britain's gas
THE HOLDERNESS Impact of erosion
- 80,000m^2 of farmland is lost each year, affecting the incomes of farmers
Social:
- Around 30 villages have been lost since Roman times - homes and businesses have been lost
