Maboneng precinct: a culture of thinkers and makers Visit Maboneng precinct in downtown Johannesburg! “Maboneng” is a seSotho word meaning “place of light”, a fitting name for a district that has fast become a centre of creative energy for Johannesburg’s urban artists. For years, this area was a no-go zone as a result of urban decay and crime. Following urban regeneration, this magical neighbourhood is now a must-see centre of life and creative energy. The precinct draws the inner-city public, as well as the chic art-going crowd of the city’s suburbs. The area also drives Johannesburg tourism within the local and international tourist markets. Old manufacturing buildings were given a second life and add character and charm. Unconventional modern buildings, which feature additional levels of residential loft apartments and penthouses, also rise upwards, making the neighbourhood denser. This contemporary urban space now brings the soul and heart of Johannesburg out though a new community of South Africans who live, work and play in the city. As the Maboneng website says: “Maboneng is a community and it’s people are the driving force behind the neighbourhood.” If you’re wondering what you can do in Maboneng, there are a multitude of options! Visit a mix of restaurants, coffee shops, clothing boutiques, art galleries and creative factory spaces. On Saturdays, the Market on Main draws a crowd. Maboneng also boasts a museum, a bookstore, a record and CD store, a collectables shop, a printmaking studio, a video production company, a photographic studio and a talent agency for aspiring actors and models. The top floor of Main Street Life is taken up by the interesting 12 Decades Johannesburg Art Hotel, where every individually designed room represents one of the past 12 decades of Johannesburg’s history. Besides the hotel, Main Street Life includes apartments, a rooftop events venue and Johannesburg’s independent cinema (The Bioscope), which screens local, international and classic films that don’t usually make it to the mainstream cinema circuit. If that’s not enough, then try out one of their events – documentaries at The Bioscope, storytelling, art exhibitions, night markets, jazz sessions and dance evenings. Question 1 (12 marks) Smith (2016) defines creative tourism as “travel directed toward an engaged and authentic experience, with participative learning in the arts, heritage, or special character of a place, and it provides a connection with those who reside in this place and create this living culture.” It is understood that cultural tourism was traditionally seen as a rather passive form of consumption, whereby tourists enjoyed heritage sites or artistic spectacles. Today, we see a twofold development of creative tourism in different parts of the world – creative tourism is either based on the traditional practices of indigenous communities or connected to more contemporary experiential industries. In the context of urban regeneration, the term “culture” refers mainly to developments, activities and events that form part of the delicate and conscious production of space (Smith 2016). Culture plays various roles in urban regeneration. Refer to table 9.3 on page 195 of the prescribed textbook and apply the following four stated roles of culture to the Maboneng precinct case study. Explain in your own words why each role is relevant to the Maboneng precinct case study.
