HC week 1 Compassionate Technology
Compassion Compassion: Strauss 2016 synthesized existing conceptualizations of
compassion and indicated that it seems to consist of five elements:
1. Recognizing suffering in others;
2. Understanding the common humanity of this suffering;
3. Feeling emotionally connected with the person who is suffering;
4. Tolerating difficult feelings that may arise;
5. Acting or being motivated to act to help the person (alleviate
suffering).
Compassion is both an attitude or sensitivity to suffering, and taking the
expedient action to improve the human condition.

technology Lowest level
- Technology is a way in which people use natural phenomena to
address human wants and needs.
- You could think about (sun)light, a lens and the wish to better see
really small things.
Middle level
- Technology is a collection of assemblies that together constitutes a
functioning system.
- When one considers a smartphone then in it are a variety of systems
that employ natural phenomena such as electromagnetism.
Highest level
- ‘The entire collection of devices and engineering practices available to
a culture’ defines technology.
- At this level the dynamic interplay of human needs and solutions
through technology are part of a complex system of regulations
economies, standards and social rules.
Compassion Compassionate technology
ate - Way in which human beings leverage natural phenomena to facilitate
technology and enable both the recognition and relieving of human suffering (the
need most prominently present in the definition of compassion).
- From this viewpoint, labelling technology as ‘cold’ or the
psychotherapist as ‘warm’ is beside the point.
- The point is how we can optimally recognize and relieve human
suffering through our best human (engineering and care-taking)
efforts.
