Globalisation worldwide movement toward economic, financial, trade, and communications integration Innovation Innovation generally refers to changing or creating more effective processes, products and ideas, and can increase the likelihood of a business succeeding. Strategy devising plans to achieve the long-term goals of an organisation Changes in Technology - Amazon Prime Air - As time passes, the technology is developing at a high rate. This forces/allows amazon to change and develop some of their main products - Amazon Prime Air - This year the company created a new event called MARS. In which they introduced a new delivery system using drones (Prime Air Drone) which aims to reduce Amazon's 2 day shipping to one day - Delivery drones aren't widely available for US customers because of the need for regulatory approvals. But Amazon is hoping to use these devices to get customers items that weigh five pounds or less in about 30 minutes, helping it deliver products to shoppers much faster. - The company is already piloting drones in the UK and has permission to test drone deliveries in the US. Effect of amazon prime air ( - Getting drones approved could bring about an even bigger change in consumer shopping, pushing more purchasing to online stores like Amazon and away from local shops and big-box brick-and-mortar stores. - Prime Air is one of many sustainability initiatives to help achieve Shipment Zero, the company's vision to make all Amazon shipments net-zero carbon, with 50% of all shipments net-zero by 2030. When it comes to emissions and energy efficiency, an electric drone, charged using sustainable means, traveling to drop off a package is a vast improvement over a car on the road. Today, most of us run to the store because we need an item now. With a service like Prime Air, we'll be able to order from home and stay home. This saves tremendously on fuel usage and reduces emissions (Jeff Wilke) Who is jeff wilke? Amazon's CEO Worldwide Consumer since April 2016. He leads Amazon Stores, Prime, operations, technology, and marketing. He joined Amazon in 1999 to lead global operations. Changes in Amazon (Alexa and Amazon Web Services) - Amazon Alexa has been introduced which utilises voice recognition. Amazon have already sold over 20 million Alexa's, which would have generated a fair amount of revenue. As technology changes, Amazon has become a large B2C e-commerce giving customers a 24/7 access to purchase products as well as fast delivery. - Amazon Web Services, which reported $3.53 billion in revenue for Q4 2016, is another example of innovation, expanding Amazon's core offerings from e-commerce to the digital B2B space Change -Negative implications - Change in the laws (data protection): Amazon used to advertise most of its products using data they received from customers. However, now there is a law against this method, they must change their strategy. - Value increase has been fueled by declines in traditional retailers. The Amazon Effect has caused shares in companies like Sears Holdings, JCPenney, Kohl's, Macy's and many other stalwarts of the bygone era to be crushed. - Due to the Amazon Effect, the entire brick-and-mortar retail industry is slowly shutting down. Comparison between Wall- Mart and Amazon - In 2016 Walmart was worth $216 billion, and Amazon was worth $332 billion. The difference could be explained by realizing that Wal-Mart was the leader at brick-and-mortar sales, which were shrinking, while Amazon was the leader in e-commerce, - Since then Wal-Mart's value has increased to $222 billion - up $6 billion, 2.8%. Meanwhile Amazon's value has increased to $403 billion- up $71 billion, 21.4%. - Over three years (starting 3/3/14) Wal-Mart's per share value has declined from $74 to $71 (down 4%,) while Amazon's has risen from $370 to $845 (up 128%.) (Forbes, Hartung) Culutre: (Negative Implications) - Jeff Bezos has received the Axel Springer Award 2018 for business innovation and social responsibility. - During the award ceremony, angry employees protested outside. - The Amazon boss has responded to criticism about poor pay and working conditions at Amazon. - However, it isn't just the pay with which Amazon employees are dissatisfied. Employees are also complaining about "chaotic conditions" in the workplace, stress and lack of occupational safety, amongst other things. - However, the noise wasn't coming from aggrieved employees; it came from journalists wanting a photo of Bezos. - With reference to the protest outside, Bezos said: "I am very proud of our working conditions and I am very proud of the wages that we pay. In Germany, we employ 16,000 people, we pay at the high range of any comparable work. We have workers councils, of course, and we have very good communications with our employees — so we don't believe we need a union to be an intermediary between our employees." (business insider) Culture (Positive) - Amazon's culture allows them to meet with the demands of their customers, which aligns with their company vision - Through the Charles Handy's theories of corporate culture, Amazon can be then be seen to fit in with task culture which 'is job oriented and it is present in organisations where individuals work as a team and power is derived only from expertise and only when required.'[1] - This also drives a culture of innovation within the company, which pushes employees to work hard at creating products best suited for their customers. Using the 2-pizza rule - Rated 3.4 out of 5 from current and former employees. 74% said they would recommend the company to a friend. An employee has said "best work culture environment, friendly management, space to grow." "Many teams at Amazon are flexible and provide supportive work environments with ample opportunities for career development and growth" (Stone) Ethics (positive) (about shipment zero) - In 2019, Amazon announced Shipment Zero, an initiative to make every Amazon shipment net-zero carbon, with half of all shipments achieving net zero carbon by 2030. - The first Shipment Zero deliveries will begin shipping to customers before the end of 2019 in both Europe and the U.S. before expanding to India, Japan, and other geographies in 2020 and beyond. - A Shipment Zero package will be transported in a zero-emissions delivery vehicle—for example, one of 100,000 newly ordered electric delivery vehicles, an electric bike, or an electric rickshaw in India. - Also with the use of Amazon Prime Air Other Positive Ethics - Amazon helps in the community, supporting their overall CSR, as they provide educational programmes to communities across the UK. Their goal is to help vulnerable children succeed in today's world by creating positive learning environments; developing academic skills and helping them find careers. - AWS's infrastructure is 3.6 times more energy efficient than the median of the surveyed U.S. enterprise data centers. More than two-thirds of this advantage is attributable to the combination of a more energy efficient server population and much higher server utilization. (sustainability, about amazon) Negative Ethics - Avoiding taxes: in 2016, Amazon paid £7.4m in corporate taxes on sales of £1.5billion, making product prices cheaper. They are accused to be operating the UK business in countries with lower taxes - Amazon members who have Prime, they will more likely to spend more money on it. This could be unethical, as non-members will not purchase as many products due to not having Prime. ("Why Amazon") - The unethical ways of treating employees in Amazon warehouse, with long working hours, bad environment between employees, What are brick and mortar stores? - Brick and mortar refer to a traditional street-side business that offers products and services to its customers face-to-face in an office or store that the business owns or rents. Brick and mortar stores have found it difficult to compete with most web-based businesses like A Inc (Investopedia) Issues with amazon prime air - Wilke said the drones be able to fly up to 15 miles. But an Amazon representative afterward acknowledged that distance is the drones' round-trip range. - The drones are lightweights as far as how much they can carry - Landing could be a problem in many places - The company first announced plans for Prime Air all the way back in 2013, but soon ran into problems with logistics and regulations. - Then in 2016, it said it had made its first successful drone delivery to a customer in Cambridge, England. But that proved to be a one-off stunt rather than the beginning of a regular service. Innovation in Amazon (Fire Phone and Destinations) - The Amazon Fire Phone was garbage when it was released five years ago in July 2014. At its announcement, Jeff Bezos stood on stage and called the device "gorgeous," "elegant," and "refined." It's none of those things. - innovation was a big flop as it couldn't quite compete with the iPhone or Android. At one point, they sold the phone for 99 cents but it still didn't work. Amazon, in the end, had a $170 million loss and stopped selling the phones. - Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos famously called the e-
