Content analysis: data collection method in which variables are constructed by coding a set of
primary documents to say something about units of analysis. using inductive and deductive coding.
Unobtrusive, because we are not affecting the units of analysis by coding. We are just analyzing them.
Primary documents aka codex: can be of different types, like answers to open questions in a survey,
transcripts, emails, tweets, newspaper articles, movies, pictures. All these documents that are
analyzed by being coded in a research process are called a codex. By coding we’re creating data.
Three approaches to coding:
1. Deductive coding: creating variables using theoretical constructs
2. Inductive coding: creating theoretical constructs using primary documents
3. Combining: both inductive and deductive coding
Steps in content analysis:
1. Formulate a research question with variables and units of analysis
2. Select primary documents
3. Develop an operationalization; a coding scheme
