TEI430: Research Report
To produce an academic research report, demonstrating your ability to analyse and
interpret observational data. The research report will also evidence your
understanding of theories of child development and educational policy in relation to
key concepts in the primary school classroom (e.g. behaviour management).

, Behaviour management is the method of behavioural modification which focuses on
maintaining order and is used in the classroom to maintain the focus, learning and
behaviour of the children. The are different methods used in schools to make sure
that the children’s behaviour is acceptable and to make sure that their learning is not
disturbed by any negative behaviour. In school A’s policy they state that they aim to
‘develop a pupil’s sense of responsibility and independence for their own actions’
(School A, 2020). This method helps to show the children that their actions have
consequences, and they will be dealt with to correct that behaviour but also learn
from their mistakes and reflect on what they did to take responsibility and own up to
what they did and the next steps that they have to take to make sure they do not do
the same again. Schools can make sure that they are managing behaviour well by
following guidance from the government on what they can do to manage the
behaviour of the children in the school. ‘Good schools encourage good behaviour
through a mixture of high expectations.’ (DfE, 2016a). Schools should have a clear
policy that sets out high expectations of what behaviour they are expecting from the
children whole they are at school, they may do this by setting classroom rules with
the class and discussing these rules and their meaning, have a clear reward system
that the school follows in which the children know of this system and how it works
and the actions that happen when they are taking part in negative behaviour as well
as positive behaviour. The schools will need to make sure that whatever their
expectations are for the children they enforce them correctly to maintain their
behaviour and in their learning.
After conducting some observation research and creating a framework the was some
themes that I had come across that come from the teacher’s behaviour management
skills and knowledge and the way that the children reacted to her management and
the skills that she used to create a calm, controlled atmosphere and environment for
all the children in the classroom. While observing the teacher and the children in the
video the are some key themes that stood out for me and are seen in the
observation framework (appendix one). Within the first few minutes of the teacher
meeting the children as well as the parents the teacher set out a clear command and
control of the classroom to show to the children that she was in control of the
atmosphere and boundaries of the classroom so that the children understand that
within the classroom the are rules and boundaries that they need to stick to but also
the teacher seems to have done this to set out for a controllable and manageable
environment, as well as making sure the was an understanding the teacher will be
giving out the instructions and directions. Also, to make sure that for the teacher will
know the boundaries of the children as well, this can be how the children react to the
teacher, their peers and to understand the personality of each individual child. Albert
Bandura’s social learning theory is based on personality and states that people learn
from one another and observe each other, this indicates that the teacher wants the
children to observe her and her behaviour and model the correct behaviour as well
as showing to the children that she is the one who is observing them and managing
their behaviour and creating an environment where the children must follow rules to
learn, develop and maintain relationships. The children will develop a moral self and
