Unicef
Introduction
Unicef is an organization within the United Nations that dedicates itself to the
well-being of children.
They shall ensure that the International Convention on the rights of the child are
respected all over the world. Their task is to make sure that every country will
respect and look after the rights of the child.
The founding of Unicef
After the second World War a lot of children in the affected countries had no food,
clothes or a roof above their heads. Thousands of people lived in camps and
there were not enough medicine to help the people who were sick. To change this
situation, Unicef was founded by the United Nations General Assembly meeting
on 11 December 1946. Around 1950 these children didn’t need the help and
support of Unicef anymore, but a lot of children in Africa, Latin America, Asia and
Eastern Europe needed the same help very badly. Nowadays Unicef supplies
children in more than 155 countries of clean drinking water, food, vaccinations,
education and protection.
The organisation
The head office of Unicef is based in New York. Unicef has offices in more than
155 countries where aid projects for children are settled and being implemented.
Furthermore, there are 36 Unicef richer countries who are called National
Committees. These 36 committees try to raise as much money as possible for
enabling the work that Unicef does. Unicef Holland is one of the National
Committees and is situated in The Hague. Also there are so called Unicef
ambassadors, these are famous people who help to get Unicef worldwide in the
news or try to get other people to become member of Unicef. For example Lionel
Messi, Shakira, Robbie Williams and Selena Gomez.
How does Unicef get their money?
UNICEF depends on voluntary contributions. These contributions come from
people, businesses, schools, and associations that support Unicef with donations
or they become a member of Unicef. A lot of volunteers raise money through all
kind of activities and events. The government also gives money to Unicef for
special projects.
What does Unicef do?
One of the most important activities of Unicef is education. For example, you've
got Dung, a 10 year old girl from Viet Nam. 85% of the population of Vietnam
speaks Vietnamese, but in the mountain regions where about 50 smaller groups
are living, they each speak their own language. Many children of these groups do
not go to school, because the lessons are in Vietnamese. Unicef makes sure that
the children in the far mountain regions get education in their own language,
they also make sure there are enough teaching materials and playgrounds. That
enlarges the chance that the children go to school.
Another important subject of Unicef is food. In Mozambique is almost half of the
children population malnourished, because the children only eat rice in which are
not enough nutrients. Unicef makes sure that information is given about good
