Unit 11: Psychological Perspectives
Learning Aim B: Examine the contribution of psychological perspectives to the
management and treatment of service users’ specific behaviors.

Paragraph 1
In this section of my coursework, I will be analyzing factors and how they influence
specific behaviors, in this case, Andy and Keira's behaviors. Additionally, I will be
discussing treatments and management and the difference between them. I will also
give examples of these different treatments and management techniques and discuss
how they will help Andy and Keira and why these interventions are so important. Lastly,
in this section of my coursework I will be evaluating the use of the treatments and
management techniques.

P2: Explain how varied factors influence human development and specific
behaviors.
M2: Analyse the value of identifying factors influencing human development and
behaviors in the application of psychological perspectives to the management
and treatment of different service users’ behaviors.

Paragraph 2
There are several physical factors that influence human development and
behavior. One is called the circadian rhythm, which is the idea that bodily functions
run on a cycle. An example of this is the sleep cycle, a constant 24-hour cycle the body
adjusts to. Without proper signaling from the body's internal clock, a person may have
difficulty falling asleep, waking up at night, or not being able to sleep when they want in
the morning. Their overall sleep can be reduced, and a disturbed circadian rhythm can
also mean that one's sleep is disturbed. This can affect a service user's behavior, for
example inadequate quality sleep can increase the risk of mental illnesses such as
anxiety and depression, which can alter a service user's daily behavior. In children,
poor sleep can also affect their development - for example, it can make it hard for them
to focus or concentrate in school, which can negatively impact cognitive development.
Another factor that can influence human development and behavior is the structure of
the brain. Scientists have discovered that the human brain is made up of four different
lobes: the frontal lobe, the parietal lobe, the occipital lobe, and the temporal lobe.
The frontal lobe controls behavior, personality, and mood. The parietal lobe

processes sensory information such as touch and temperature. The occipital lobe
controls vision and visual processing, and the temporal lobe controls speech and
perception, such as facial recognition. An example of how brain structure can be a
physical factor in how we develop and how behaviors can be seen in the case of
Phineas Gage. This was an extraordinary case in which Phineas Gage survived an
accident where a metal pole was pierced into his head, causing extensive damage to
his frontal lobe. This case showed that the frontal lobe controls personality, as after
the injury Phinneas's behavior changed dramatically, and he became unable to control
his emotions (Guy-Evans, 2022). This case could be useful to explain why Andy
suffers from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) as it is possible that Andy's
frontal lobe was damaged in the car accident. This then led to Andy starting to act
differently and having trouble controlling his emotions. If this is the cause of Andy's
PTSD, it would negatively impact how Andy's behavior was handled. This is because
it can be extremely difficult to repair damage to brain structure. So that would make it
extremely difficult to get rid of Andy's PTSD, since it would not be as simple as going to
therapy or taking medication. However, a positive effect could be that even if the brain
structure cannot be repaired, therapy or medication can still help manage some of the
symptoms of Andy's brain damage, even if they cannot cure it.

Paragraph 3
Social, cultural, and emotional factors can also influence human development
and behavior. Social factors include the environment and the society in which an
individual grew up. The society in which an individual grows up influences his behavior,
his values and what he considers to be social norms. It also creates an individual's
perception of right and wrong, which can impact how individuals behave, whether
socially perceived as right or wrong. In terms of culture, diverse cultures have different
belief systems, morals, values, and traditions. This can also greatly affect a person's
development and behavior. An example of this could be that in some cultures being
able to hear voices is seen as a gift from God and is the ability to communicate with the
gods, but in a Western culture this is seen as schizophrenia which is a mental illness.
Emotionally, we have also grown up differently, which can affect how we develop
behavior. Some people are educated to express their emotions, feelings, and concerns,
including sadness and jealousy. While others may be discouraged from doing so, which
would lead to them exercising those feelings all at once, which could lead to potential
mental health problems. The way Andy was raised emotionally probably has an impact
on how he handles his feelings. If Andy has learned to hide his feelings and what he
feels, he is more likely to become prone to addiction and addictive behaviors. This is
because he feels he cannot express and manage his feelings and therefore has been
diagnosed with PTSD. Emotional factors can negatively impact Andy, as the way he
