Change
Organizational change → managers will have to change some things in their workplace.
Alteration of people, structure or technology
Change agent → someone to act as a catalyst and assume the responsibility for managing
the change process
External factors
- Changing consumer needs and wants
- New governmental laws → government laws require changes in how managers must
conduct business
- Changing technology
- Economic changes → changes in economic forces
Internal factors
- New organizational strategy → (for example improving customer service)
- Change in composition of workforce → managing a workforce that is diverse based
on surface-level and deep-level
- New equipment
- Changing employee attitudes → changing attitude toward company leadership and
image
Process
Calm water metaphor
- Unfreezing → changing → refreezing
- Increasing driving forces → forces pushing for change
- Decreasing restraining forces → forces that resist change
- Move away from organization’s current equilibrium
White water rapids metaphor
- Consistent with a world that’s increasingly dominated by information, ideas and
knowledge
Reactive → reacting to a situation (later on)
Proactive → initiated preparation well ahead

Strategy → a change in how managers ensure the success of the company
Structure → includes any change in structural variables such as reporting relationships,
coordination mechanisms, employee empowerment or job redesign
- Structural components → how work gets done and who does it
- Structural design → change in design, function or creation
