, CHAPTER 1: THE INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

This report is written for the Business Research course that is a part of the bachelor
International Business at the Amsterdam University of Applied Science (AMSIB). The
assignment belongs to the course Business Research. This research analyzes perceived
opportunities in Slovenia from 2002 till 2020. According to GEMconsortium.com, the
Perceived Opportunities Rate is the percentage of the population between the ages of 18 and
64 who see a good chance to start a business in the country in which they live. This excludes
individuals already active in any stage of entrepreneurial activity.
This variable was chosen due to Slovenia's economic situation in 2012 and to study how the
society reacts to such economic changes. Slovenia's economy was led into a bad double
recession in 2009 and 2011/12.

1.2 Country description

Slovenia is a small Central European country having Alpine mountains, forests, historical
sites, and Adriatic coast. Slovenia has borders with Austria to the north and Hungary to the
northeast. The country shares a lengthy border with Croatia to the east, southeast, and south.
Slovenia borders the Italian port city of Trieste to the southwest, where it has an important
coastline along the Gulf of Venice. (“Slovenia | History, Geography, & People | Britannica”)

Most of the inhabitants of Slovenia are ethnically Slovene. Slovenia's two ethnic minority
groups are Italians and Hungarians, neither of which is very big. Primorska, a historical city
on the Italian border, is home to the majority of Italians that live in Slovenia. Hungarians
mostly live in the northeastern Prekmurje area, which, like Primorska, is a historical city.
Gypsy communities are also indigenous to Slovenia, and can be found mostly in northeastern
Slovenia or spread throughout southern Slovenia along the Croatian border.
Slovenian religion. Christianity, namely the Catholic Church, is the major religion of
Slovenia. Other minor Christian groups with a following include Eastern Orthodoxy and
Protestantism, the two largest Christian denominations after the Catholic Church (“Slovenia -
United States Department of State,” 2020). Slovenia has a small population of Muslims,
Hindus, and Jews. Around 18% of the population of Slovenia is atheist or agnostic
(Wikipedia Contributors, 2022).

Slovene is Slovenia's official language and a South Slavic language. Slovene is among the
very few languages that still uses the dual grammatical number to refer to two people or
objects in addition to singular and plural forms. Slovene has two dialects: the eastern Slovene
