ADVICE REPORT
MANAGEMENT CONTROL SYSTEM
St Jansdal
Word count: 2475
Teacher: Sandra Sülz
, Introduction
The regional hospital St Jansdal (further: SJD), has expanded from one location in
Harderwijk to a second location in Lelystad. Because of the two locations, SJD was less
affected by the covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, SJD worked on a renewed strategy
for 2020 through 2025.
This strategy involves taking responsibility and committing to the medical care of
residents throughout the region. With this, the SJD wants to ensure that patients get what
they were promised, that employees have a pleasant work environment and that the hospital
itself remains financially healthy. In line with this strategy, SJD is on the brink of improving
the effectiveness of the organizational structure.
Especially the specific role of medical specialist requires special attention. The medical
specialists are incorporated within an association, but they are not part of the formal
hierarchy of the organization. The rather informal role of this association leads to tensions
because the medical specialists have aims and desires that are not in line with the financial
objectives and strategic goals of SJD.
Within this report, advice is composed regarding possible adjustments of the
management control system (further: MCS) of SJD such that the acting of medical specialists
is congruent with the financial objectives and strategic goals of SJD.
