, Assignment 1
To do this assignment, I have read a book and I watched the movie based on the story in the book.
The first step I took was watching the movie. I did that so it would be easier to understand the story
after reading the book. After I finished both, I found differences between the story in the book and
the story in the movie. Then I realised this assignment would be perfect to compare those to each
other. I found some small differences but also a lot of big differences!
The story is about Holly’s life after losing her husband. Her husband, named Gerry, died because of a
brain tumour. The first difference I found between the book and the movies, starts right in the
beginning. Despite the fact that the story in the book starts with the letters, the movie starts with
Gerry’s funeral. In the film they showed a few moments that are extra. Those moments don’t have
influence on the story.
The most important aspect of the book are the letters Holly receives. The letters are written by Gerry
before his death. Every month, Holly finds a letter and follows the instructions Gerry wrote. Earlier in
the book, Gerry and Holly talked about a list containing things Holly can do to live a grateful life
without Gerry. Gerry wrote down all the activities on the list and spread it over multiple letters. In
the book, Holly got all these letters all together. On every letter was written a date she was supposed
to open it on. Because of this, Holly knew exactly she could open one every month.
However, the movie did not go like that. On Holly’s 30 th birthday, Holly received a recorder including
a spoken message from Gerry. Holly heard him saying that she would receive letters through the
months. In the movie, Holly found the letters on unexpected moments and places, and sometimes in
very weird ways. So a difference between the book and the movie is that Holly in the book knew
when she got a letter and in the movie she did not know.
In the end of the movie there is a scene exposing the one who carried the responsibility to give the
letters to Holly. Elizabeth, Holly’s mother, had been looking out for the special ways to give the
letters to Holly. On the contrary, in the book you knew from the very beginning that it was Elizabeth.
This makes the fact that there was a plot twist in the movie but there was not one in the book.
I did not only find differences, I also found similarities. The stories takes place at the same time!
In the book, you don’t know when Gerry died, but you know the dates written on the letters. Holly
received letters every month from April till December. After December she was supposed to live her
life without Gerry. In the movie, you can see it becoming summer, autumn and finally winter. So in
both of the stories it starts in the spring, in April, and it ends in the winter, new years eve.
A small difference about the end of the story. In the movie it ends on new years eve, but in the book
you can read a few pages about Holly living her life without Gerry and without his letters.
I also found a difference in the way they let the characters act. For example, a friend of Holly named
Denise is a calm, relaxed friend. In the movie, Denise acts very hyper and is always chasing boys. Also,
in the book Holly has a big family. She has a lot of siblings. In the movie you only see a younger sister
and a mother.
To summarize, the filmmakers did make a few big differences. I do understand their actions, because
I think the plot twist in the movie makes the story more exciting. In the movie they kept a secret
