1. REFRESH AND REFLECT: Please get back to what you have learned in the first year course
Institutions of the European Union and explain - in short - the political role and function of
the a) European Commission, b) the European Parliament and c) the Council of the
European Union.
Last year, we learned about the ins and outs of the European Union in the module “Institutions
of the EU”. The political role and function of the European Commission is the Executive power.
Their function is initiation, implementation, EU Budget and External Relations.
The European Parliament the Legislative together with the Council of Ministers. The Parliament
has power over the budget and power over the institutions.
The Council of the European Union is the Legislative power. Their function is adopting the EU
Budget together with the EP, coordinating economic policies of MS, defining and implementing
the EU’s Common Foreign and Security Policy and concluding international agreements on behalf
of the EU.
2. BOOK QUESTION: Name four ‘symbols’ of the EU.
The four symbols of the EU are the European anthem Ode to Joy, the slogan “United in
Diversity”, the Euro and the European Flag (McCormik, John, 2020).
3. DISCUSSION QUESTION (250 words): Why is it relevant to study public policy making of the
EU? (Argumentation question, give at least three arguments why it is relevant).
It is relevant to study policy making of the EU. The EU has been evolving over the years. It is not
only interesting, but also very relevant to learn about how the EU has evolved and what it has
become, also in terms of policy making.
The EU used to mainly make rules and regulations. However, nowadays the world looks very
different. In the last 10 years there have been some large events, such as the euro crisis, the
immigration crisis, the Brexit and COVID-19. After those events, the EU started to mainly make
