Dimensions of globalization
● North to south trend, invisible migration “south to south”
● Capital: trade was increasing before ww1 decreased through ww1 - ww2 major increase
after ww2
● Politics: north tragic events get more news time than south
● Culture: movies that do better in the south than in the west

Deterritorialization: “the process through which geographical territory becomes less of a
constraint on social interactions”

Interdependence: The process through which “security and force matter less and countries are
connected by multiple social and political relationships” (Keohane and nye in power and
interdependence, 1997). Can have tragic consequences, Colton main element for mobile
phones caused a spike in violence in congo as they saw to seek control over the element.

Time-space Compression
The set of processes that cause the relative distances between places(I.e. As measured in
terms of travel time or cost) to contract, effectively making such places grow “closer”

Direction for a transnational approach

1. The territorial trap
States do not have exclusive power over territory
Domestic and foreign realms are not separate
Boundaries of the state are not the boundaries of society
2. Sovereignty as relational
Rule existed in other forms (city-state, monarchies, empires)
Territorial state is a recent invention (19th century)
Not strict division domestic / international
Transnational elite networks / transgovernmentalism
3. Spatiality as networked
Unified territorial control has a history
Effective territorial sovereignty is a myth
Power operates much through networks
Transnational social fields
4. Identity as multiple and hybrid
Nationalism is historically determined
Identities have never entirely fits territorial borders
Globalization has forced the discrepancy
Hybridity, rather than homogeneity

, ● Globalization is not simple it's a complex set of processes of deterlizationa,a
interdependence and compression of time and space

● Academic theories have debated through the notion of the “territorial trap”
disappearance or persistence of the nation state in the face of globalization

Three main concepts of international politics need to be examined
● Sovereignty as relational
● Spatiality as networked
● Identity as multiple and hybrid

Why did states appear, to get resources for war ad the creation of burracies and political
institutions

Sovereignty definition
● Domestic: autonomous power of the state created within th estate
● Interdependence sovereignty: control of borders “if borders exist”
● International legal: recognition by other states

● Transnational flows pre exists the nation state and have shaped it
● The nation state is a violent project reducing the world to national and international
● The nation state is also a way of forgetting the transnational nature of world politics

Diasporas:
1.The process of dispersion of spread of any people from their original homeland,
2. A social group formed as a result of the dispersion from an original homeland that maintains
ties across borders

Diasporic triangle
Home state, host state, and diasporic group

malthusianism
the view that without moral restraint the population will increase at a greater rate than its means
of subsistence, as proposed by the english economist and clergyman thomas robert malthus

● Diasporas as resources for the nation state. Guest workers, and war and peace
● The context of diasporas originates from the experience of the jewish dispersion
● Diasporas have become more used to designate more transnational communities
● Aat peak of terrotalization, diasporas were a problem to solve
● After ww2 they were a solution for economic worker problems
● After cold war some were incorporated in globalized conception of the nation state
