ER MODEL
Topic: Entities, Attributes, and Relationships
1. Objective:
By the end of this lab, you will be able to:
Understand the concept of an Entity-Relationship (ER) Model.
Identify entities from a real-world problem.
Identify and classify attributes of entities.
Understand the concept of a key attribute.
Understand relationships between entities.
Represent entities, attributes, and relationships using an ER diagram.
Analyze a simple database requirement and convert it into an ER model.
Design a basic ER diagram using a database design tool.
Explain and justify the structure of their ER model.
Relate the ER model to the database tables that will be created in later labs.
2. HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE REQUIRED:
Hardware
PC or Laptop
Keyboard and Mouse
Minimum 4 GB RAM
Internet connection

Basic understanding of databases and tables
3. INTRODUCTION TO ER MODEL
An Entity-Relationship Model (ER Model) is a conceptual model used to represent the structure of a database.
It helps us understand:
What data needs to be stored

, DATABASE SYSTEMS LAB MANUAL
What objects/entities exist
What information belongs to each entity
How different entities are related
Before creating actual database tables, we can first design the database using an ER model.
Example:
Consider a university database.
A university may have:
Students
Courses
Teachers
Departments
These are possible entities.
A student may have:
Student ID
Name
Program
These are attributes.
A student may enroll in a course.
This is a relationship.
Therefore:
Student ───── Enrolls In ───── Course
The ER model helps us represent this structure before implementing the actual database.
4. WHY DO WE NEED AN ER MODEL?
Creating database tables directly without planning may result in:
Missing information
Unnecessary data duplication
Incorrect relationships
Poor database structure
Difficulty in modifying the database later
An ER model provides a visual representation of the database design.
It allows the database designer to identify problems before implementing the database.
