SLIDE 1 Pitch Martin Luther king once said, the old
law of an eye for an eye will leave the
world blind. This got me thinking
because in many aspects in our society
we are a little bit blind. There is no
justice in killing in the name of
justice. One does not right a wrong by
creating another wrong.
SLIDE 2 Pitch + We are all going to die and we have
introduction no choice in that, but we do get to
choose whether to kill or not and
capital punishment is the most
premeditated murder of all.
**introduction** and I study law at
the university of applied sciences in
Leiden. Today I am taking you
through a journey about the impact of
the death penalty on society and
express my personal opinion on the
subject.
SLIDE 3 Structure of I will start off with a little bit of
pecha kucha information regarding the origin and
progression of the death penalty. Then
we will talk about its impact in our
society. I will introduce you to a
theory of a new system which could
drastically affect the crimes which
punished by the death penalty, and we
will conclude with my personal
opinion on the subject.
SLIDE 4 Early history of Death penalty dates all the way back
death penalty to the 18th century B.C. We are talking
about the era of Babylon. Throughout
the years capital punishment evolved
in many ways, from burning at the
stake, to drowning, crucifixion and
impalement. You name it, it was used
as capital punishment for a variety
crimes.

SLIDE 5 Progress of death Speed through the years and narrow it
penalty through down a bit to our own little piece of
the years land, I am proud to say that the
Netherlands abolished the death
penalty in 1870. There is however one
country left in Europe that still carries
out executions. That country being
Belarus. They carry out their death
penalties by shooting.
SLIDE 6 Connection Now if we look at the number of
between action gruesome scenario’s that we have
from B.C to happened in the name of capital
present time. punishment such as the witch hunts, it
Death penalty astounds me that something such as an
might justify execution, a phenomenon dating back
genocide from to an era B.C is still legal and
government. acceptable in 2020.
SLIDE 7 Not to mention that to this date, there
are governments committing genocide
in the name of capital punishment, a
perfect and recent example being
China. Other examples would be Iran,
Iraq and a lesser known one would be
Nigeria. Moving on to the impact it
has had in our society.
SLIDE 8 Fact Did you know that 1 to 2 in every 10
death row inmates are innocent? 2 in
every 10 people go through something
that is completely irreversible. Many
of whom get exonerated years later. In
my opinion there is absolutely no
margin of error acceptable when you
are talking about somebody’s life. Is it
ethical to give the government this
power?
SLIDE 9 Does it have a Moving on to the correlation between
positive influence death penalty and lower crime rates.
in crime rate? There have been numerous and
numerous studies into this topic and
none of them have concluded to show
any significant low or rise in crime
rate when the death penalty is legal.
So until this day it has not been
proven that there is a correlation
