How to Read the Statistics
Before looking at the numbers, here is how to interpret the statistical symbols on the
slides:

1. Correlations (
2. ρ or 𝑟): Range from − 1. 0 (strong negative relationship) to + 1. 0 (strong positive
relationship).
○ + 0. 40 or higher: Strong positive link (as one goes up, the other goes up
significantly).
○ − 0. 30 to − 0. 50: Moderate to strong negative link (as one goes up, the
other drops significantly).
○ Near 0. 00 (e.g., . 01 or . 08): No relationship at all.
3. Regression Coefficients / Estimates (β or path numbers): Show
cause-and-effect strength. A positive number means it increases the outcome; a
negative number means it decreases it
4. Asterisks (*, **, ***): Indicate statistical significance (𝑝 <. 05, 𝑝 <. 01, 𝑝 <. 001).
It proves the finding is real and not just random chance.
5. Standardized Scores / Z-scores (Profiles): 0 represents the average score.
+ 1. 0 means 1 standard deviation above average; − 1. 0 means 1 standard
deviation below average.

,SELF-REGULATION SUMMARY

Problem 1: Who’s in charge?

Lecture 1 – Introduction to Self-Regulation Dr. Jessica M. Alleva

Personal Self-Control History & The Search for Balance

Dr. Alleva introduces her academic and personal background with self-control to
contextualize how perceptions of self-regulation evolve over time:

● Academic Trajectory: Served as a tutorial group tutor for the Self-Regulation course
around 2012 and became the course coordinator around 2018.
● Personal Evolution:
1. Past: Characterized by over-control (rigid, restrictive rules surrounding food
intake and academic studying).
2. Present: Focused on finding balance—specifically balancing care for others
with self-care.
● Interactive Reflection Activity: Students are instructed to pair up with a neighbor to
reflect on two personal questions:
1. What does your personal "self-control history" look like?
2. Where in your life would you like to cultivate more balance?

Popularity & Interdisciplinary Relevance of Self-Control

Self-control is a topic of immense public, scientific, and cultural interest:

● Public Interest: Generates over 4 billion search results on Google and fuels a vast
self-help publishing industry.
● Interdisciplinary Nature: Examined across clinical psychology, cognitive
neuroscience, social psychology, health psychology, and behavioral economics.
● Pop Culture: Referenced across media, including Laura Branigan's classic 1980s
pop song "Self Control".

Health & Lifestyle Impact ("What's All the Fuss About?")

Struggles with self-control are central to major public health challenges,
health-compromising behaviors, and lifestyle diseases:

● Health Challenges: major behavioral challenges involving self-control failure:
1. Smoking/Tobacco Use: A person lighting a cigarette.
2. Excessive Gambling: A suitcase filled with casino poker chips and playing
cards.
3. Alcohol Abuse: Shelves lined with liquor bottles in a bar.

4. Medication Non-Adherence: A pile of colorful pharmaceutical pills and
capsules.
● Lifestyle & Stress Factors:
1. Sleep & Burnout: A woman sitting in a dark bedroom with light filtering
through window blinds, holding her head in exhaustion.
2. Physical Exercise: Legs running on a paved park path in running shoes.
3. Mindfulness & Rest: A person sitting peacefully on a cliff edge overlooking a
mountain valley.
● Social & Time Management Challenges: time management, waking up early, and
overcoming procrastination.
● Bandura’s Foundational Quote: Albert Bandura (2005) emphasized that human
health is predominantly governed by daily behavioral habits rather than biomedical
fixes:

"The quality of health is heavily influenced by lifestyle habits. This enables people to
exercise some measure of control over the state of their health [...] By managing their
health habits, people can live longer, healthier, and retard the process of aging.
Self-management is good medicine. If the huge benefits of these few habits
were put into a pill it would be declared a scientific milestone in the field of
medicine." (Bandura, 2005, p. 245).

Clinical Pathologies of "Too Much" Control

While lack of self-control receives significant attention, excessive control (over-control)
can be equally damaging to mental health:

1. Perfectionism/Compulsive Behaviors
2. Eating Disorders
3. Social Anxiety & Isolation

Positive Correlates of Adaptive Self-Control

When exercised adaptively, self-control correlates with high psychological functioning:

● Key Benefits: Higher self-esteem, superior interpersonal skills, healthier romantic
and familial relationships, more optimal emotional regulation responses, better
financial security, and higher academic achievement.

Adopting a Critical Mindset (Keep in Mind 1 & 2)

Dr. Alleva prompts students to adopt an open, critical, and contextualized approach to
self-regulation research:

1. Challenging Diet Culture: Society normalizes bodily "improvement," restrictive
eating, excessive exercise, and categorizing foods as inherently "good" or "bad".
Students must ask: Is this truly healthy? Who established these cultural norms, and
which bodies/groups are marginalized by them?
