Chapter 1 – What Is Developmental Psychology?
1.1 Introduction to Developmental Psychology

Development is neither purely biological nor purely environmental. A useful conceptualization is:

Development = biological maturation × experience × social context × time

The multiplication sign is conceptual, not mathematical: developmental outcomes arise from interacting
processes rather than independent causes.

Three distinctions are fundamental:

 Growth: quantitative increase, such as vocabulary size or body mass.

 Maturation: biologically influenced unfolding of capacities.

 Learning: relatively lasting change resulting from experience or practice.

Modern developmental psychology therefore asks not simply “What changes?”, but also:

1. When does change occur?

2. How does it occur?

3. Why do individuals develop differently?

4. Which mechanisms can alter a developmental trajectory?

The field is consequently concerned with both normative development—patterns commonly observed across
people—and individual variability, where developmental pathways diverge.

1.2 Psychological Development Across the Lifespan

The lifespan perspective rejects the idea that development ends with childhood. Development continues
through adolescence, adulthood and ageing, although the nature and direction of change vary.

A person may simultaneously experience gains and losses. For example, accumulated knowledge may increase
during adulthood while processing speed later decreases. Development is therefore multidirectional rather
than a simple upward progression.

Core lifespan principles

 Plasticity: capacities can change in response to experience.

 Multidirectionality: some abilities improve while others decline.

 Contextuality: development depends on social, cultural, economic and historical conditions.

 Individuality: people follow different developmental trajectories.

Neuroplasticity is particularly important. The nervous system remains capable of structural and functional
adaptation throughout life; plasticity is greatest in some developmental periods but does not disappear in
adulthood. This helps explain why education, rehabilitation, repeated practice and environmental change can
modify functioning beyond childhood.

Development is better understood as a trajectory than as a fixed sequence of stages.

, 1.3 Major Areas of Development

Developmental psychologists commonly distinguish three major domains, although in practice they overlap
extensively.

1. Physical development

Includes:

 Growth and biological maturation

 Brain and nervous-system development

 Motor development

 Pubertal and reproductive changes

 Physiological ageing

2. Cognitive development

Concerns changes in information processing and mental representation, including:

 Attention and perception

 Memory and working memory

 Language

 Reasoning and problem-solving

 Executive functions (EF)

3. Social-emotional development

Includes:

 Attachment and relationships

 Emotion recognition and regulation

 Self-concept and identity

 Social cognition

 Motivation and interpersonal competence

A fourth perspective is increasingly important: developmental context. Family relationships, education, peer
groups, socioeconomic conditions, culture, technology and historical events can modify developmental
opportunities.
