Chapter 1 – Introducing Digital Marketing
1.1 What is Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is the systematic use of digital technologies, platforms, data and communication channels to
create, communicate, deliver and capture value. It encompasses activities across the customer lifecycle,
including awareness, acquisition, conversion, retention and advocacy.

Digital marketing is broader than online advertising. It includes strategic decisions concerning:

 digital customer experiences;

 data-driven targeting and personalisation;

 digital distribution and transactions;

 relationship management and customer engagement.

Its distinctive characteristic is the ability to combine continuous interaction, measurable Behavior and scalable
communication. Digital environments therefore allow organisations to collect Behavioral data and adjust
marketing activities in near real time.

A simplified digital marketing process can be represented as:

market analysis → segmentation and targeting → value proposition → digital interaction → conversion →
retention → measurement and optimisation

1.2 The Evolution from Traditional to Digital Marketing

Traditional marketing generally relies on relatively linear communication: an organization develops a message,
selects media and communicates with a target audience. Digital environments have transformed this model
into a more interactive and data-intensive process.

The transition can be understood in three stages:

1. Mass communication: standardised messages delivered through television, print, radio and other
mass media.

2. Interactive marketing: websites, email and search engines enable direct interaction and measurable
responses.

3. Platform and data-driven marketing: mobile applications, social platforms, algorithms, automation,
artificial intelligence and connected devices enable continuous personalisation.

, 1.3 Digital Marketing as Part of Marketing

Digital marketing should be integrated into the overall marketing strategy rather than treated as an
independent promotional function. Strategic marketing determines which customers should be served, what
value should be offered and how competitive advantage can be created. Digital technologies influence how
these decisions are implemented.

The digital dimension affects the traditional marketing mix through:

 digital products and services;

 dynamic and personalised pricing;

 e-commerce and platform-based distribution;

 digital marketing communications.

A coherent strategy requires consistency between the organisation's value proposition, target market,
positioning, customer experience and digital channels.

1.4 Digital Channels and Technologies

Digital channels are technological environments through which organisations communicate and interact with
customers. Different channels have different reach, targeting capabilities, costs, data characteristics and
conversion functions.

Important digital channels include:

 websites and mobile applications;

 search engines and social platforms;

 email, messaging and digital advertising.

Technological developments increasingly connect these channels through customer data platforms, marketing
automation, APIs, cloud infrastructure and analytics systems.

Mobile technology is particularly important because smartphones enable continuous access to digital services
and allow marketers to integrate location, Behavioral and contextual information into customer interactions.

1.5 Online and Offline Customer Interaction

Customer journeys increasingly cross digital and physical environments. A customer may discover a product
through social media, compare alternatives through search, visit a physical store, purchase through an app and
subsequently receive automated digital service communications.

This creates an omnichannel environment, in which individual touchpoints should be coordinated rather than
managed independently.

Effective integration requires:

1. consistent customer information across channels;

2. continuity of customer experience;

3. appropriate data integration and attribution.

The objective is not simply to maximise digital interaction but to reduce friction throughout the complete
customer journey.
