Text: Macbeth — William Shakespeare
A study companion for essay writing, exam revision, and close reading practice.

How to use this pack: read the character cards first to get grounded, then work through the five scenes in order
— they trace the whole arc of the play. Use the quote bank when you're revising for essays, and use the outline
template every time you plan a response before you write it.

, 1. Character Breakdown Cards

Macbeth
Ambitious. Imaginative. Not built for guilt.

Motivation & flaw: He starts the play as a genuinely brave soldier — the kind of man other characters
trust without question. That's what makes his fall land so hard. The witches don't plant ambition in him,
they just say out loud the thing he was already half-thinking. Once Lady Macbeth pushes him over the
edge, he changes fast: by Act 3 he's planning murders on his own, without even telling her. His flaw
isn't ambition itself, it's that he can't sit with uncertainty. He'd rather commit a horrible act than live with
the anxiety of maybe becoming king someday.

Arc in one line: From a hesitant man who needs convincing to kill, to a tyrant who kills without
hesitation and without a plan — he trades his conscience for control, and loses both.

Lady Macbeth
Ruthless on the surface, fragile underneath.

Motivation & flaw: She's often read as the 'evil' one, but look closer — she's the character who cracks
first. Her Act 1 speech asking to be 'unsexed' shows she doesn't think she's naturally capable of cruelty;
she has to talk herself into it. That's a tell. She pushes Macbeth toward murder because she equates
ambition with masculinity, but she can't actually live with what follows. By Act 5 she's sleepwalking and
washing invisible blood off her hands — her mind gives out long before her husband's does.

Arc in one line: From the most decisive character in the play to someone who can't distinguish sleep
from waking — guilt doesn't make her repent, it just breaks her.

Banquo
Macbeth's foil. Gets the same prophecy, makes a different choice.

Motivation & flaw: This is the character students most often underuse in essays. Banquo hears the
exact same prophecy as Macbeth — that his descendants will be kings — but he doesn't act on it. He
stays suspicious of the witches instead of trusting them. He's proof that the prophecy didn't force
Macbeth's hand; Macbeth chose to act on it. That's your best evidence if you're arguing the play is
about free will rather than fate.

Arc in one line: He doesn't really change — which is the point. His static integrity makes Macbeth's
corruption look like a choice, not an inevitability.

Macduff
The one who does the right thing at personal cost.

Motivation & flaw: Macduff is the counterweight to Macbeth: another man who could have gone after
power, but instead leaves his family to fight for the rightful order. When Macbeth has his wife and
