World War I (1914–1918)

World War I was one of the largest and most destructive wars in modern
history. It lasted from 28 July 1914 to 11 November 1918 and involved many
powerful countries of the world. The war mainly took place in Europe but
gradually spread to Asia, Africa, and the oceans. It was fought between two
major groups of countries: the Allied Powers, which included France, United
Kingdom, Russia, and later United States, and the Central Powers, mainly
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. The war resulted
in the deaths of millions of soldiers and civilians and changed the political
situation of many countries. It also destroyed several powerful empires and
created new nations.

The causes of World War I had been building up for many years before the
war actually began. One major cause was nationalism, which means strong
love and pride for one’s nation. Many countries in Europe wanted to become
more powerful and expand their territories. For example, the people of Serbia
wanted to unite all Slavic people in the Balkan region, which created tension
with Austria-Hungary. Another important cause was the system of alliances.
Many countries formed military alliances for protection. The Triple Alliance
consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, while the Triple Entente
included France, Russia, and United Kingdom. Because of these alliances, if
one country entered a war, its allies were expected to join, which increased
the chances of a large international conflict. Militarism was another factor, as
many European nations increased their armies and built powerful weapons,
preparing themselves for possible wars. Imperialism also created rivalry
because European nations competed to control colonies and resources
around the world.

The immediate cause of World War I was the Assassination of Archduke Franz
Ferdinand, which occurred on 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo. Archduke Franz
Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was assassinated by
Gavrilo Princip, a member of a Serbian nationalist group. After this event,
Austria-Hungary blamed Serbia and declared war on it on 28 July 1914.
Because of the alliance system, other countries quickly became involved.
Germany supported Austria-Hungary and declared war on Russia on 1 August
1914, and then on France on 3 August 1914. Soon after, United Kingdom
declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914. Within a few weeks, most of
Europe had entered the conflict, turning it into a global war.

During the war, many major battles and events took place. In 1914, Germany
attempted to defeat France quickly through the Schlieffen Plan, but this plan
