(TEDGlobal, 2011). Next, complete the link. In light of Treasure’s talk, respond to the following
questions:
What do you find most interesting about the skill of listening?
Do you agree with Treasure’s warning about the dangers of losing the ability to
listen?
What listening strategy presented by Treasure would you like to try?
Finally, in light of the assessment, share any personal listening goals you may have to improve
your own listening skills.
For years, I’ve always seen myself as a great listener. I remember how other students
used to call me shy because I preferred to stay in my corner, listening to everyone’s
conversation, but was never part of their big conversations between students. After completing
the listening assessment, in which I scored only 13, and after watching this TED talk, I’ve come
to realize how important it is to have great listening skills and found some great listening
strategies that can help me improve my active listening skills. Listening plays an integral part in
communicating and the differences from actively listening can be seen in multiple facets of our
lives and development (Student Success, 2020). Listening isn’t only hearing words, it’s the
capacity to understand emotions, intentions, and thoughts behind those words. It’s a mental
process and it’s a process of extraction (Treasure J., 2011). Furthermore, the skill of listening can
help us to connect with others on a deeper level, which then creates empathy for one another and
mutual understanding. I totally agree with Treasure’s warning about the loss of listening ability.
