Two important phenomena are important to the illusion of film:

1. Persistence of vision: the idea that the brain retain the
image seen by the eye for a fraction of a second after the
image disappears. We rely on this in film because film is
made up on many individual still images, called frames,
that are presented in rapid succession. Because the brain
holds onto the previous image, it can piece that
information together with the image that follows.
2. Phi Phenomenon: the brain interprets the rapid succession
of images as movement. With the use of persistence of
vision, the brain can then interpret the individual frames
as fluid movement and therefore can understand a series
of still images as a moving picture.

Many toys used these phenomena to create optical illusions,
often using hand drawn images.

1830’s: The invention of photography emerged. A single
photograph required approximately 1 hour of exposure to
successful render and
image, and the subject of
the photo had to remain
still for the entire
duration, or the photo
would be blurred. The
cameras were large and
required multiple people
to operate.

, 1870’s: Technology had developed enough by this time to
allow photographs to be taken in a fraction of a second. This
allowed for motion pictures to be captured. At this time, motion
pictures were created only when live action could be
photographed rapidly and pieced together.

Fun Fact: it was only after this technological development that
we learnt that when horses run, all four of their feet lift off the
ground, something which happens too quickly to perceive by
the human eye.

1880’s: The invention of film reel emerges, which allowed
photographs to be taken in sequence
on one strip rather than multiple
individual photographs. Motion
pictures were viewed through a peep
hole type device called a Kinetoscope,
and you could find these at theme
parks or hotels. These motion pictures
lasted a few seconds and were viewed individually.

1890’s: The first projector was invented by the Lumiere
Brothers to allow multiple people to view motion pictures at
once. These were silent films, and in black and white, which
often used live musicians to
create a soundtrack.

Fun Fact: The first film to play to
the public included the image of
