, QUESTION 0NE: Learning theories for inclusive teaching
1.1.1 Disability
Disability is imposed by society when a person with a physical, psychosocial, intellectual,
neurological and/or sensory impairment is denied access to full participation in all aspects of life,
and when society fails to uphold the rights and specific needs of individuals with impairments.
Persons with disabilities experience three main types of interrelated barriers:
 social (including high cost, lack of disability awareness, and communication difficulties);
 psychological (such as fear for personal safety); and
 structural (including infrastructure, operations and information).


1.1.2 Deafness
Is have profound hearing loss, which implies very little or no hearing. These people often use sign
language for communication. Hearing loss may be mild, moderate, severe or profound. It can affect
one ear or both ears and leads to difficulty in hearing conversational speech or loud sounds. Hard
of hearing refers to people with hearing loss ranging from mild to severe. People who are hard of
hearing usually communicate through spoken language and can benefit from hearing aids, cochlear
implants, and other assistive devices as well as captioning.


1.1.3 Visual impairment
Visual impairment or vision impairment is vision loss that constitutes a significant limitation
of visual capability resulting from disease, trauma, or a congenital or degenerative condition that
cannot be corrected by conventional means, including refractive correction, medication, or surgery.
Visual impairment is the consequence of a functional loss of vision, rather than the eye disorder
itself. Eye disorders which can lead to visual impairments can
include retinal degeneration, albinism, cataracts, glaucoma, muscular problems that result in visual
disturbances, corneal disorders, diabetic retinopathy, congenital disorders, and infection.


1.1.4 Human rights
Human rights are standards that recognize and protect the dignity of all human beings. Human rights
govern how individual human beings live in society and with each other, as well as their relationship
with the State and the obligations that the State have towards them. Human rights law obliges
governments to do some things, and prevents them from doing others. Individuals also have
responsibilities: in using their human rights, they must respect the rights of others. No government,
group or individual person has the right to do anything that violates another’s rights.
