prohibited items as conducted by a security worker in the public services, using
an appropriate method.
M4 - Explain the pre-planning, execution and outcomes of searching, include any
constraints that may apply.

The police have the power to conduct a stop and search on individuals on
reasonable grounds if they suspect you of participating in illegal activity. The
sole purpose of this is to prevent and detect crime. A police community support
officer must be in uniform when they stop and question you about what you are
doing and why you are in the area or where you are going. Reasonable grounds
to do this include; suspecting you of carrying illegal drugs, a weapon, stolen
property or something with could have been used to commit a crime. The only
time you can be stopped and searched without reasonable grounds if it has been
approved by a senior police officer. This could be suspected if the officer believes
that serious acts of violence could take place, you are carrying or have used a
weapon or you are in a specifc location at a certain time. Before you’re searched
the police officer must tell you; their name and which police station they work at,
what they expect to fnd on you, the reason they want to search you, why they
are legally allowed to search you and that you can have a record of the search
and if this isn’t possible at the time, how you can get a copy. A police officer can
ask you to take of your coat, jacket or gloves. The police might ask you to take
of other clothes and anything you’re wearing for religious reasons and if they do
so they must take you somewhere out of public view. If the officer wants to
remove more than a jacket and gloves they must be the same sex as you and if
they are not they must take you to the station to have you searched. The police
may question individuals, but those individuals are entirely free to decline to
answer unless arrested.
The main reason for conducting a search is to fnd unauthorised and prohibited
items. When looking for illegal substances an officer is likely to look out for drugs
such as marijuana, cocaine and heroin. These are all a concern as it is breaking
the law and can cause irrational behaviour or potentially endanger the users life
and others around them. If they are large amounts of drugs they can be arrested
for intent to sell. During the search an officer is most likely to check the smaller
locations where the substances are most likely to be hidden such as pockets,
socks and shoes or in a backpack. If the officer was to miss these items during a
search the person may continue to use or sell as they believe they can get away
with it if an officer has not gave them a warning. This may also encourage others
which could result in a high crime rate. Another reason for stopping somebody
may be alcohol such as beer, vodka or whiskey as they are very likely to become
a public nuisance or cause a lot of disruption in the streets. A drunk is most likely
to start fghts or use abusive language so if the police can prevent this then they
should stop somebody. A person who is carrying alcohol is either most likely to
have it on show, in their rucksack or a large pocket in their jumper or trousers.
