How events change humans in certain ways
The events of September eleventh 2001 are internationally marked as a huge loss
and caused the start of major historical changes. The 9/11 terrorist attacks
performed under the flag of Al-Qaeda has resulted in a total of 2977 fatalities after
four hijacked planes were sent into New York’s famous twin towers. This major
shock inducing event is also represented in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.
Therefore, one may expect that being based on real events, the novel to clearly
depicts the effect of this disaster, however this is not the case. The primary target
of the effects caused by this accident would be the close relatives who suffer the
consequences of this, both social - and personal, carnage. Yet, the emotions of
Mrs. Schell, Oskar’s mother, towards the death of her fiance, Thomas Schell, after
the 9/11 attacks as told in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, as they do not
correspond with the emotions after the same real time events of people losing their
relatives.
First of all, it is often mentioned how Oskar’s mom does not show any
emotions. This is a quote from Mrs. Schell, in which she responds to Oskar,
mentions her lack of emotions after the death of her fiance.
“She said," I cry a lot, too, you know." "I don't see you cry a lot." "Maybe
that's because I don't want you to see me cry a lot." "Why not?" "Because it
