1. Identify common causes of GI tract bleeding and list predisposing factors. a. Common causes of GI bleeds relate back to chronic problems associated with the GI tract. Some include chronic gastritis, cirrhosis, PUD and history of previous GI bleeds. Some predisposing factors include smoking, alcohol use, previous history of GI problems. 2. What physical findings and lab data support a diagnosis of acute GI bleeding? a. Physical findings that support a diagnosis of a GI bleed include hematemesis, melena, nausea, abdominal pain and abdominal rigidity. Some lab data that supports a GI bleed include increased BUN levels, decreased hematocrit, hemoglobin, hematuria and a decrease in clotting factors level.
