, 1. Unit Overview & The Big Picture
Unit 1 covers c. 1450–1648 and traces two connected stories: how the Renaissance changed the way Europeans thought
about themselves and the world, and how the Age of Exploration connected Europe to the rest of the globe — for better
and for worse.
A shift toward secular, human-centered thinking (Renaissance) combined with new global trade and
conquest (Exploration) permanently changed Europe's intellectual, political, and economic life — this dual
shift is the core idea of Unit 1.

This unit makes up roughly 10–15% of the exam weighting and regularly supplies multiple-choice questions and
DBQ/LEQ evidence about causation — you are very likely to be asked to explain WHY the Renaissance happened or
WHY Europeans began exploring overseas, not just describe what happened.
The 3 Things Your Teacher Wants You to Walk Away Knowing:
• The Renaissance was a shift toward humanism — valuing individual human achievement and classical learning,
not abandoning religion entirely.
• Exploration was driven by the 'Three G's' — Gold, Glory, and God — plus practical causes like new navigation
tech and the fall of Constantinople.
• This unit sets up causation chains (Black Death → Renaissance; Exploration → Columbian Exchange →
Commercial Revolution) that essay questions love to test.
