2. What is regenerative design?


Regenerative design
This approach aims to be net-positive by restoring ecosystems, building social health, and replenishing
natural resources instead of only minimising damage. It is defined as a method where human systems
are designed to co-exist and co-evolve with natural systems to ensure planetary and social health.


Net-positive
This term describes a state where a project or intervention gives back more to the environment and
society than it takes away. In the context of regenerative design, it represents a shift from causing
ecological loss to achieving active ecological gain.


Lecture diagram
This visual tool illustrates the progression of architecture from Business As Usual through the stages of
Reduce, Avoid, and Restore, finally reaching Regenerate. It maps the movement of the built environment

3. Sustainable vs regenerative — real examples


Sustainable design

Sea Vegetable (Japan)
This regenerative project involves growing seaweed in the ocean and on land to simultaneously absorb
CO2 and support marine biodiversity. By actively improving the health of the surrounding ecosystems
through its core operations, it serves as a primary example of regenerative practice.


Kamikatsu (Japan)
This zero-waste town serves as a dual example of sustainability through its intensive 45-category waste
sorting and regeneration through community engagement. The way people work together and value
their environment creates social health and collective responsibility that goes beyond mere waste
reduction.

This initiative restores 2,000 hectares of forest on degraded farmland to improve water cycles,
biodiversity, and local well-being. It represents a fully regenerative model by looking beyond simple

4. Why does regenerative design matter?


Planetary boundaries
Scientists have identified nine critical boundaries, such as climate, biodiversity, and water, that keep the
planet stable and safe for human life. As of 2023, six of these nine boundaries have been crossed,
indicating that Earth is no longer in a safe operating space.


Anthropocene
This geological era is defined by human activity shaping Earth's systems more significantly than natural
forces. It highlights the profound and often destructive impact that industrialization and modern
civilization have on the planet's physical and biological processes.

This photographer captures large-scale images of industrial landscapes, mines, and waste mountains to
document the physical footprint of civilization. His work makes visible the massive environmental costs
of modern life that usually remain hidden from the public eye.

Built environment impact
The construction sector is a major driver of ecological breakdown, using 50% of extracted materials, 30%
of global water, and producing 30% of waste. This data proves that architects are not neutral designers,
as the built environment is one of the largest contributors to planetary instability.


6. The economic system behind the crisis


GDP growth
Gross Domestic Product measures the total value of goods and services produced but fails to account for
ecological health or social well-being. The pursuit of continuous exponential growth on a finite planet is
identified as the root cause of the current environmental crisis.

This 1972 study demonstrated that exponential economic and population growth would eventually lead
to planetary collapse due to the depletion of finite resources. It serves as a historical foundation for the
argument that human progress must be decoupled from resource consumption.


Decoupling
This concept refers to the attempt to separate human well-being and economic progress from
environmental destruction and resource use. It is a critical challenge for future systems that seek to
thrive without further depleting the Earth's natural capital.


Circular economy
This economic model focuses on using recycled materials and keeping resources in use for as long as
possible instead of extracting new ones. While it reduces environmental harm, it is often seen as a
stepping stone toward a more deeply transformative regenerative economy.


Regenerative economy
This system generates value by actively restoring ecosystems and growing materials rather than just
recycling existing resources. It emphasizes material effectiveness, where every material used must
produce positive ecological outcomes alongside its technical performance.


Doughnut Economics
Developed by Kate Raworth, this framework defines a safe and just space for humanity between a social
foundation of needs and the ecological ceiling of planetary boundaries. It provides a model for societies
to thrive while ensuring they do not overshoot the Earth's environmental limits.


7. Who can drive change?


Sufficiency
This principle involves living well with less physical space and fewer materials while increasing shared
value through collective infrastructure. It challenges the consumption-heavy status quo by prioritizing
quality of life and community participation over individual material accumulation.


8. Regenerative design across scales


Whanganui River
In a landmark example of regenerative governance, this river in New Zealand was granted the legal rights
of a living entity. This shift treats nature as a stakeholder with its own inherent rights rather than just a
resource to be managed or exploited.
