Factor Quadratic Expressions
Goal: To find the roots of a quadratic equation.
Recall the three forms of a quadratic function:
- Vertex form: a(x – h)2 + k
- Standard form: ax2 + bx + c
- Factored form: a(x – r)(x – s)
To solve a quadratic equation means to find the roots of the equation. The
roots of the equation are the zeroes or x-intercepts(where the parabola
intersects the x axis) of the quadratic equation. For example, the roots of

the equation (x + 1) = 9 are -4 and 2.
x + 1 = +/- 3
x = +3 -1 or x = -3 -1
x = +2 or x = -4
