BPT1501 ASSIGNMENT 2 SEMESTER 1 2024 UNIQUE # 529262

BEING A PROFESSIONAL TEACHER

BPT1501

Assignment 2 Semester 1 2024 Unique # 529262

QUESTION 1

1. As a Mathematics teacher, list and explain the intervention strategies you
would apply in your teaching in assisting a child who is like Peter and why do you
think your strategies will be effective? Substantiate your response by giving
examples

 List and discuss the importance of at least 4 strategies
 Give examples as to how you will implement the four strategies.

Inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity are common characteristics of a child
with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD. Hence students with ADHD
have a problem with sustaining attention and controlling impulses, consequently
hampering them from staying focused on their math in class and at home.
Teaching Students with ADHD demands to first evaluate each child's individual
needs and strengths. Then you can develop effective strategies that are
engaging and tailored to their learning style. As a Mathematics teacher it is
essential to provide an environment where a student with ADHD can organise
choices and actions easily, and successfully.
Strategies for teaching students with ADHD include:
 Providing clear rules and procedures
 Breaking down tasks into manageable chunks
 Incorporate Technology and Digital Tools
 Modelling suitable behaviour
 Check student work early and often.

Strategy 1: Providing clear rules and procedures

Providing clear rules and procedures can lower the ‘noise’ or chaotic eminence in
the child’s classroom life significantly.

These rules and procedures can be made jointly with the child; they do not have
to be imposed arbitrarily, as if the student were incapable of thinking about them
reasonably. Involving the child in this process builds trust with the child,
Moreover, an open approach puts the child at ease to be free and open up to ask
for help when the need arises.

Strategy 2: Breaking down tasks into manageable chunks

Break down the instructions into smaller steps to make it easier for the child to
focus on one thing at a time instead of being overwhelmed with multiple steps.
Giving one piece of directions at a time is helpful for a child with ADHD to stay
focused on one task at a time and maintain focus through the class period.

By breaking down directions, the child is more likely able to successfully
complete tasks and answer directions when devoting complete focus to one thing
at a time. It can help to divide focused work into small, short sessions rather than
grouping it into single, longer sessions.

Break down math concepts into smaller, more manageable parts. Use visual
aids, manipulatives, or hands-on activities to make the learning process more
engaging and accessible. It is vital to break complex math problems into step-by-
step instructions to make them more adaptable.

Visual aids like graphs, pictures, number lines, pie charts, geometric shapes, and
fraction bars help students with ADHD when completing math problems. These
visual aids are helpful because they provide something concrete students can
see.

Strategy 3: Incorporate Technology and Digital Tools

Should take advantage of the technological era we are in by making use of
technological and digital tools or math apps that offer interactive and engaging
ways to learn math concepts.
