of halfzijdige blindheid is een gedeeltelijke uitval van een gezichtsveld, waarbij men
als het ware blind is voor een bepaald gedeelte (bv. rechter- of linkerhelft) van het
gezichtsveld. Die gedeeltelijke blindheid neemt, afhankelijk van de locatie van het
letsel in de optische zenuwbanen (die van het oog naar de occipitale kwab lopen),
verschillende vormen aan: een kwart van het gezichtsveld links of rechts
(kwadrantanopsie of een willekeurig stukje dat wegvalt,... Met het oog zelf is er dus
niets mis. De term ‘blindheid’ is echter niet zo goed gekozen, omdat sommige
personen niet alle informatie missen, maar een bepaald gedeelte wazig zien. De
persoon met hemianopsie is zich over het algemeen bewust van het probleem en
kan het via hoofd- en oogbewegingen (gedeeltelijk) compenseren voor het
weggevallen stuk gezichtsveld
