1.0 China Belief Systems
-​ Confucianism and Developments in East Asia:
-​ First dynasty was the Shang dynasty
-​ incredibly decentralized (not strong enough to control everything in the
kingdom
-​ reliant on rulers and leaders in other provinces to rule on their
behalf w/ use of threats, pomp, etc.)
-​ Has lots of control in center but not areas that are far
-​ 11th century BCE: shang falls and zhou starts
-​ Zhou used mandate of Heaven:
-​ Stated that some universal force provided justification for an emperor to
overthrow the previous ruler and rule China. If a ruler was bad, heaven would
take back its blessing and unleash disaster on China (ex. Disease, drought, etc.).
-​ After Zhou Dynasty (1076 BCE - 256 BCE), China entered a warring states period, which
led to a rise in different beliefs with solutions to this problem
-​ Confucianism:
-​ Prevalent during Han Dynasty
-​ During this period (around 551 BCE) Confusius, a philosopher, was born. He
lived around the same time as Buddha in India
-​ His teachings taught how people should behave in everyday life, rather than
focusing on a deity,
-​ Focused on education, benevolence, virtue, and respect for those in
authority
-​ Embraced patriarchal social structure and duty of people to honor their
ancestors
-​ Relationship to family is parallel to relation to state, ruler on top, then
public officials as sons and common people as women
-​ You should always follow the proper way, which is the dao
-​ “if they cannot be attained in accordance with the dao they
should not be kept”
-​ People are naturally good, they all have the ren
-​ Filial Piety - Listen to your parents and honor/respect them
-​ Impacted chinese beliefs and values more than any other philosophy
-​ Legalism
-​ Prevalent during Qin Dynasty and Zhou Dynasty
-​ Founded by Han Feizi
-​ Gave wealth and power to the government to justify and allow for large-scale
government projects
-​ Allowed government to impose standardized money
-​ Legalism was enforced to prevent people from acting on selfish impulses, as it
was seen to further benefit society if everyone strictly followed the law
-​ Legalism believes people are inherently ‘wicked’
