BAEPs - CNIM Questions and Correct
Answers
BAEPs Ans: -Brainstem auditory evoked potentials.

-Affected by pathologic and non-pathologic factors.

Non-Pathologic Factors Ans: -Knowing how non-pathologic factors
like anesthetic, temperature, filter settings, and stimulus settings
affect the BAEP will lead to greater accuracy when interpreting
changes.

Filter Settings Ans: -In BAEPs, can affect the latency and
amplitude of the waveforms.

-Phase lead (low frequency) and phase lag (high frequency) apply
to BAEPs in the same manner as with other evoked potentials.

-Lower number = later latency.

-Don't change filter settings during a case as it can cause false-
positives.

Click Intensity Ans: -Has many effects upon BAEPs.

-Wave V is the first wave to resolve when increasing stimulation.

-Stimulation intensity is normally set at 115-120 dB peSPL.

-Increased click intensity generally leads to higher-quality
waveforms.

Peak Equivalent Sound Pressure Level (peSPL) Ans: -Measures the
amplitude peaks of short-duration tones or clicks and compares
them with longer latency measured tones.

Click Polarity Ans: -Auditory stimulators also produce
condensation and rarefaction clicks.

-Alternating the click polarity will remove the cochlear
microphonic and stimulation artifact when averaged.

Condensation Clicks Ans: -Simply means that the initial part of
the click causes a compression increase in the pressure of the air
toward the tympanic membrane.

-The tympanic membrane will initially move in toward the inner
ear.

-Results in a better wave V response.

Rarefaction Clicks Ans: -Means that the initial part of the click
causes a decrease in pressure on the tympanic membrane.

-Thus the tympanic membrane will initially move out.

-Results in a better wave I response.
